THE HENRY GIRLS
The Henry Girls are sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen McLaughlin and they come from County Donegal in the North-West of the Republic of Ireland. They first played for us at Grayshott and charmed us with their warm, friendly personalities, brilliant musicianship and wonderful sibling harmonies, back in October 2015. This return gig is long overdue.
The trio formed as a professional music group in 2001 after Lorna and Karen returned from living in Australia, where they had started to write and perform songs. Joleen, the youngest of the three, was finishing her Leaving Certificate at that time and as a promising Harp and Piano player, it seemed only natural that she should join her two sisters. They wrote, recorded and released their first album ("Between Us" 2001), that same year.
They have now recorded six original albums in total and their music is infused with the rich cultural heritage of their native Donegal but blended with an outward-looking and subtle Transatlantic flavour to it.
It has been described as:
"full bodied and powerfully dynamic"
by fRoots Magazine.

and
"Slow Down" (Live) here:

What sets The Henry Girls apart, is their distinctive sound which is a captivating fusion of Harp, Fiddle, Accordion and tight, impressive three-part harmonies. The harmonious interplay between these instruments and their hauntingly beautiful vocals, creates a listening experience that transcends boundaries, capturing the essence of both their Irish roots and a Global musical spirit.
The Henry Girls are as comfortable playing at International Folk Festivals and appearing on stage at prestigious venues as they are playing in a local Irish pub. Their music resonates with people from diverse backgrounds, connecting them through the Universal language of Melody and Harmony.
But make no mistake, these are strong women and they are prepared to take up a fight and a cause, if they see injustice anywhere. In recent times, they have played several concerts in support of the Palestinian people.
Their song "Not Your Fight", recorded with Rioghnach Connolly is an edgier song:

Their latest release is their sixth album and is entitled:
"A Time To Grow". It came out in January 2024. It reflects their growing maturity as individuals, as a trio and as recording artists. It is set to be a landmark album for them and Irish National Radio Station RTE 1, voted it Album of th Week upon its release.

RACHAEL McSHANE & THE CARTOGRAPHERS
Rachael is a renowned Folk singer, Fiddle player and Viola player from the North-East but is probably best known for playing the Cello with one of Folk's most successful ever bands; BELLOWHEAD. They won no less than 8 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Keeping all eleven members of the band busy and happy, was always going to be a challenge and after they recorded five albums together, they parted company in 2016. However, they re-united in 2022 for a series of hugely popular and highly successful gigs.
Audiences were reminded of their unique alchemy, energy and talent.
Away from her Bellowhead commitments, Rachael has always been a sought after performer and recording artist. Her debut solo album "No Man's Fool" was released on Navigator Records in 2009 and created such a positive response that she was soon scooped up by Topic Records, which is the World's oldest Independent record label.
Rachael leads The Cartographers, a band that includes the exceptional talents of guitarist Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing) and Melodeon player Julian Sutton (Sting, Kathryn Tickell Their music is a blend of Traditional and Contemporary elements, with Rachael's stunning vocals and instrumental skills, leading the line.
Here is a joyous offering called "Ploughman Lads":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y36PksjUxWg
In recent years, Rachael has lent her voice to a new adaptation of The Transports, alongside The Young 'Uns, Faustus, Nancy Kerr, Greg Russell and Matthew Crampton. Her ability to breathe new life into old songs through her voice, her playing and her interpretation, all ensure that she is first pick for any new musical venture.
Here They are at Beardy Folk Festival 2022 with "Green Broom":
