NEXT UP AT GRAYSHOTT FOLK CLUB:

Grayshott Folk Club's "Mini-Festival"

(as mentioned on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show on

4th June 2025)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 1st August 2025 @ 7.30pm

MERRY HELL

First up at our "Mini-Festival" are Wigan's favourite sons (and daughter), the inimitable Folk/Rock ensemble that are Merry Hell.

These Multi-award wining Folk/Rockers offer joyful, uplifting music with a message for troubled times and we know you will be royally entertained and leave the Hall with a skip in your step and a song going round and round in your head.

This could be either their fourth or fifth visit to Grayshott but who's counting? Each time they play at Wickham Festival, they drop by at Grayshott Village Hall and fill the place with enthusiastic, carefree and willing audiences who are instantly charmed by the music and anthemic songs that Merry Hell are famous for.

Within two or three songs, everyone in the audience will be swaying, holding their hands in the air and joining in the chorus of earworms such as "Bury Me Naked":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8XSJjpYdA4

Resistance is futile as they follow one anthemic song with another like "Lean On Me, Love":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXjm17RcO7g

Through 6 well-received albums and hundreds of gigs, they've offered voices of hope and beacons of light to anyone valuing both melody and positive humanity. Their live performances have won many admirers and they are an in-demand festival band whose army of followers is growing by the day.

On May 9th this year, Merry Hell released a brand new album called "Rising Of The Bold". It has already garnered heaps of praise from critics and the listening public alike.

The lead single from the album is a song called "Peace Can Be Louder Than War" which they played live on their nationwide tour in May 2024. They recorded each gig audience singing the chorus along with the band and added them to their "1000+ strong choir".

On Friday 31st May 2024, they added the voices of Grayshott Folk Club's audience to that choir and they are on the recording. It was played on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show on Wednesday 4th June 2025 and you can listen to it here, about 18 minutes in to the programme:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002cmjp

Come and join Merry Hell for what promises to be a memorable night.

STEVE WICKHAM (ex-The Waterboys) + RAY COEN

We welcome Steve and Ray back for their third visit to Grayshott Folk Club. They will be travelling over from the West of Ireland to play for us, before moving on to play at Wickham Festival the day after their Grayshott gig.

Listen to The Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues" here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4UQJwd3awQ

Steve co-wrote this song with Mike Scott of The Waterboys and plays the Fiddle on it. Mike described Steve as:

"the World's greatest rock fiddle player"  and Steve has played with many of the best that popular music has to offer:

Bob Dylan, U2, Sinead O'Connor.....the list goes on.

In addition to playing with a range of other musicians, Steve has found time to write, record and release two brilliant Solo albums. "Geronimo" (2004) was his first solo album and the title is the same name Steve gave to his favourite Fiddle.

"Beekeeper" (2017) was Steve's second solo album and it is never off my turntable at home. It contains a whole variety of music that embraces a diverse range of musical styles.

More recently, Steve has been working on his third album and on his last visit in May 2024, shared with us one of the songs he wrote during lockdown.

It is a beautiful and optimistic song of hope called

"All Will Be Well":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvKyxcMNn-k

Ray Coen is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from Sligo, in the West of Ireland. He has been a co-member of an International band called No Crows with Steve for many years.

Steve and Ray know each other really well and complement each other musically, on stage. Together, they make beautiful sounds.......don't miss them.

A little bit of Grayshott Folk Club history:

Grayshott Folk Club went live with our first ever gig on

22nd January 2011. The main aim of Grayshott Folk Club is to bring "quality live music at affordable prices " to Grayshott, which is a village near HINDHEAD in South-West Surrey but Grayshott Village Hall itself, is actually situated just inside the Hampshire border by about 50 yards and is officially the biggest village hall in the whole of Hampshire.

We mostly host Folk bands/musicians and our past guests have included;

Acoustic Strawbs, Altan,

Ashley Hutchings/Blair Dunlop/Becky Mills, Belshazzar's Feast, Bob Fox, Breabach, Coig, Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies, Jon Wilks,

Katherine Priddy, Kris Drever + Chris Stout, Lau, Melrose Quartet, Merry Hell, O'Hooley & Tidow,

Sam Carter/Sam Sweeney, Sam Kelly/Jamie Francis,

St. Agnes' Fountain,

SilverBlues

(Ric Sanders, Ray Jackson, Vo Fletcher and Tom Leary),

Steve Wickham (ex-The Waterboys) & Ray Coen,

Tannahill Weavers,The Bully Wee Band, The Churchfitters,

The Young 'Uns and Tide Lines, amongst many others.

We occasionally stray off-piste with a little bit of live Americana/Pop/Rock/Prog Rock music and

Caravan, Colin Blunstone & Band, James Yorkston/Nina Persson, Jarrod Dickenson, Joe Topping & Scott Poley, Linda Lewis, Mike d'Abo, Police Dog Hogan,

The Christians and The Leisure Society

have all played for us since we started out.

Basically, we do whatever we can, to keep it live, keep it local and to keep hungry musicians off our streets......

Our first choice venue is:

Grayshott Village Hall,

Headley Road,

Grayshott,

Nr. HINDHEAD,

Surrey GU26 6TZ

and from time to time, we also use

St. Alban's Church, Tilford Road,

HINDHEAD, Surrey GU26 6RB

as venues to host our live music events.

If you wish to buy tickets for our gigs, you can buy them in person from:

Grayshott Post Office, Crossways Road, Grayshott GU26 6HJ

Alternatively, you can call Des O'Byrne on 01428 607096

or e-mail me at: grayshottfolkclub@btinternet.com
