THE HENRY GIRLS

The Henry Girls are sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen McLaughlin and they come from County Donegal in the North-West of the Republic of Ireland. They first played for us at Grayshott and charmed us with their warm, friendly personalities, brilliant musicianship and wonderfulsibling harmonies back in October 2015. This return gig is long overdue.

The trio formed as a professional music group in 2001 after Lorna and Karen returned from living in Australia, where they had started to write and perform songs. Jolen, the youngest of the three was finishing her Leaving Certificate at the time and as a promising Harp and Piano player, it seemed only natural that she should join her two sisters. They wrote, recorded and released their first album ("Between Us" 2001), that same year.

They have now recorded six albums in total and their music is infused with the rich cultural heritage of their native Donegal but blended with an outward-looking and subtle Transatlantic flavour to it.

It has been described as:

"full bodied and powerfully dynamic"

by fRoots Magazine.

Listen to "Down By The River" here:

and

"Slow Down" (Live) here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N886YCuP-s

What sets The Henry Girls apart, is their distinctive sound which is a captivating fusion of Harp, Fiddle, Accordion and tight, impressive three-part harmonies. The harmonious interplay between these instruments and their hauntingly beautiful vocals, creates a listening experience that transcends boundaries, capturing the essence of both their Irish roots and a Global musical spirit.

The Henry Girls are as comfortable playing at International Folk Festivals and appearing on stage at prestigious venues as they are playing in a local Irish pub. Their music resonates with people from diverse backgrounds, connecting them through the Universal language of Melody and Harmony.

But make no mistake, these are strong women and they are prepared to take up a fight and a cause, if they see injustice anywhere. In recent times, they have played several concerts in support of the Palestinian people.

Their song "Not Your Fight", recorded with Rioghnach Connolly is an edgier song:

Their latest release is their sixth album, entitled:

"A Time To Grow", which came out in January 2024. It reflects their growing maturity as individuals, as a trio and as recording artists. It is set to be a landmark album for them and Irish National Radio Station RTE 1, voted it Album of th Week upon its release.

You can hear the title track here:

A little bit of Grayshott Folk Club history:

Grayshott Folk Club went live with our first ever gig on

22nd January 2011. The main aim of Grayshott Folk Club is to bring "quality live music at affordable prices " to Grayshott, which is a village near HINDHEAD in South-West Surrey but Grayshott Village Hall itself, is actually situated just inside the Hampshire border by about 50 yards and is officially the biggest village hall in the whole of Hampshire.

We mostly host Folk bands/musicians and our past guests have included;

Altan, Bob Fox, Acoustic Strawbs,

Ashley Hutchings/Blair Dunlop/Becky Mills, Belshazzar's Feast, Breabach, Coig, Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies, Jon Wilks,

Katherine Priddy, Lau, Merry Hell, O'Hooley & Tidow,

Sam Carter/Sam Sweeney, Sam Kelly/Jamie Francis,

St. Agnes' Fountain,

SilverBlues

(Ric Sanders, Ray Jackson, Vo Fletcher and Tom Leary),

Steve Wickham (The Waterboys) & Ray Coen,The Bully Wee Band, The Churchfitters, The Young 'Uns and Tide Lines, amongst many others.

We occasionally stray off-piste with a little bit of live Americana/Pop/Rock/Prog Rock music and

Caravan, Colin Blunstone & Band, James Yorkston/Nina Persson, Jarrod Dickenson, Joe Topping & Scott Poley, Linda Lewis, Mike d'Abo, Police Dog Hogan,

The Christians and The Leisure Society

have all played for us since we started out.

Basically, we do whatever we can, to keep it live, keep it local and to keep hungry musicians off our streets......

Our first choice venue is:

Grayshott Village Hall,

Headley Road,

Grayshott,

Nr. HINDHEAD,

Surrey GU26 6TZ

and from time to time, we also use

St. Alban's Church, Tilford Road,

HINDHEAD, Surrey GU26 6RB

as venues to host our live music events.

If you wish to buy tickets for our gigs, you can buy them in person from:

Grayshott Post Office, Crossways Road, Grayshott GU26 6HJ

Alternatively, you can call Des O'Byrne on 01428 607096
